Radical hunt: island hunt

Full details

TLF ID:
L470
Year level:
3–4
Series description:
The 'Radical hunt' series has a game-like format. It helps students to understand how the radical side of a Chinese character contributes to its meaning. Students hunt for hidden characters in different settings. They are encouraged to notice that radicals are generally related to character meanings, but that there are exceptions to that rule.
Learning object description:
Students explore Ibis Island and search for Chinese compound characters that share a common radical. They discover the related sounds and meanings of the characters. Students find all 20 characters at four locations and sort the characters according to their radicals. They identify the general pattern: that the meaning of radicals contributes to the meaning of compound characters. This learning object is one in a series of two objects.
Key learning objectives:
Students identify radicals that contribute to the meaning of compound characters.
